Focus on Faculty: Kelli Amaral from Fresno City College
-- Mathematics Instructor
Kelli Amaral recently participated in RA 101 for STEM and in a three-day Reading Apprenticeship seminar at Fresno City College. After the three-day experience, Kelli told facilitators Shawn Frederking and Tiffany Ingle, "I feel like now that I've been part of multiple events with Reading Apprenticeship, I'm really starting to get it at a new level and see how I can integrate it in my class."
In a follow-up phone call, Kelli explained, "It was so nice to be at the three-day seminar [in Fresno]. I could just be there and not worry about anything else. The fact that the facilitators used the RA strategies to teach us about RA -- it just made sense and really helped me with my understanding. In my math classes, I haven't really done any peer work - even think, pair, share! But I really see the value in it now. And I am not afraid of metacognitive conversation! Math is really all about the metacognitive -- "What does this mean?"
"I feel like I'm on the edge of a great ocean with Reading Apprenticeship and I'm going to jump in and discover a lot of things. And I don't know how it's going to work or what it's going to be exactly, but it's really exciting. I'm really looking forward to being together with other math instructors at the STEM three-day seminar!"
Kelli would love to see YOU at the STEM three-day seminar, saying, "I don't know why people would not want to sign up for the three-day for STEM!"
